Here's an optimal argument for using MAID.
A patient is facing a terminal illness, they experience great suffering, and they have been given a prognosis of less than 6 months to live.
Here's a major issue with that take.
It is a doctor's duty to provide healthcare for the betterment of their patients. The issue with MAID is that it claims death is a reasonable treatment to end someone's suffering.
One method gives doctors the right to administer lethal medication to their patient. This is euthanasia, and it is killing.
Another method is when doctors prescribe medication to their patient for self-administration. This is suicide. The doctor has knowingly prescribed a lethal overdose of medication to an individual.
How long will we sit comfortably with statistics?
The numbers are there. We can see that thousands of MAID cases occur each year. There's a quote that's misattributed to Joseph Stalin.
"The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic."4
When the floodgates of MAID are opened, we lose touch with the individuals. We offer them a simple solution that can save millions of dollars in healthcare costs and bypass a search for more ethical ways to help them.
The average person who utilizes MAID can be regarded as a legitimate patient for it and then added to the statistics pool of numbers. It's become normalized and accepted.
Extreme examples of MAID's misuse can be set aside as outliers and pushed back by MAID's advocates.
When you open the doors to flawed solutions, you open up the accidents. Behind each number was a person who had value in society. That value never went away because of anything they were facing.
If healthcare can't work to provide actual care for patients in these cases, then the system is broken. MAID is a sorry excuse for compassion, mercy, dignity, and healthcare as a whole.
